"If winter comes, can spring be far behind?"

Kerry Constantino March 12, 2023

It's March - which means… time for a quarterly newsletter!  I know that supposedly we are closing in on spring, but it really doesn’t feel like it. Currently, there are still several inches of snow outside my house and I feel like I’m still firmly in winter, but as I am reminded daily, nothing lasts forever, even winter in Maine.

The last few months have flown by and there has been a lot going on. First, I began a project on the Winter Solstice, each week, using a single color family as inspiration and then finding objects that were in that color family to take portraits of. I know, the idea of making portraits of inanimate objects is maybe a little strange, but I believe that as a photographer, I am in relationship to everything and everyone who is in front of my camera. Approaching these photos as if I have a relationship with my subjects - regardless of whether or not they are alive - is incredibly important. It has been a really fun way to explore color and push through to make work when I find myself losing motivation this time of year. Filling the darkest, grayest days of the year with bright colors has been keeping me afloat.  You can view many of my images on my website here.  I’m planning to continue to expand on this work and see where it takes me. Practicing flat-lays and still life has opened me up to the possibility of opening my practice up to product photography. I figure the best way to begin putting myself out there is to start spreading the word with people who are already my biggest supporters, YOU!

Since last year, I have been leading community members on a series of  self-paced workshops, in-person tutorials, and photo walks using 35mm film and simple cameras.  With the help of the Maine Arts Commission, we have turned the images that participants made into two beautiful zines. The first was printed at the end of January, and the second is nearly ready for print at the end of this month. While the project in its current form is drawing to a close, I would love to see how it can be reimagined and developed. If you are interested in participating in the future or would like to learn more about the 35mm film and zine project, please send me a message! You can always email me at [email protected]

The last thing I want to share is that I am currently booking family, lifestyle, and documentary series sessions for spring, summer, and fall 2023, with wedding bookings going into mid 2024. I know how challenging it can be to plan things far in advance, but it’s often difficult to get on my books last minute, once it starts to fill up and I plan my travel dates, there’s not much flexibility. So it’s important to get in touch sooner than later. You can always send me an email or contact me here.

I hope your days are full of light and you are enjoying the gradual shift back to warmer seasons. Take care, and thank you!
