The slow gradual shift from winter to spring felt so long this year, but just yesterday as we were driving home from a trip into Portland, Maine I looked out at a field that was bursting with green, there was a flock of wild turkeys and a small herd of deer in the distance, and I felt it. We finally made it. I am gearing up for the warmer months, and looking forward to a spring and summer filled with families, events, and fun.
May 15th is International Family Day. I saw that yesterday as I was organizing my calendar and it made me think -
Family photography is the beating heart of my business.
For almost a decade photography was just a hobby for me. I loved using film cameras and bringing them with me everywhere. I was a street photographer and I didn’t take it too seriously. Then, people started asking me to take their portraits and I wanted to feel like I could do so with confidence. So, I enrolled in a class at San Diego City College. A few days after my enrollment, I found out I was pregnant with my daughter. That semester, learning proper technique was everything to me. I loved spending hours in the darkroom, learning as much as I could, because I didn’t know when I would be able to take another class and I wanted to learn as much as possible. My professors were incredibly supportive. Encouraging me to “Say YES, Kerry! Don’t say no to photography work!” and reassuring me that some of the best photographers have been mothers. It was life changing. My teacher there wanted me to know, that I could find work as a photographer, and he encouraged me to photograph families.
Over the last eleven years, I have had the opportunity to photograph families at some of the most incredible moments of their lives. I have clicked the shutter for weddings, and family portraits, and bat-mitzvahs. I have chased toddlers through palm tree lined resort hotels and held my breath as babies were pushed into this world, in front of my camera, in front of me.
People have just kept bringing me into their world, it is truly such a gift to do this work.

This is a 1 hour session within 90 minutes of Portland, Maine. Sessions can be booked at your home or a location that you love. Maine has an abundance of stunning locations and I would be happy to suggest a place, especially the beach.
Images are made using both digital and analog film cameras and are delivered via a private online gallery with printing rights.
